Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize writes, \u201cIt is my belief that the globalization of peace and human rights is more fundamental and effective than the globalization of anything else.\u201d With violent conflicts raging in many parts of the world, this statement could not be more true. According to the United Nations, we are witnessing the highest levels of displacement on record with over 110 million people forcibly displaced worldwide. As an organization founded, led, and supported by immigrants, we at SYL Foundation believe that it is our collective responsibility to fight for universal human rights, including the right to safe and just migration. Recognizing that international systems of oppression drive displacement, exploitation, and persecution, we are investigating how best to make meaningful investments to address factors that affect global migration, while staying committed to our local communities in Washington\u2019s King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties.<\/p>\n

We seek to better understand the global forces and systems that shape forced migration so that we can strive to upend them. This work is urgent, complex, and larger than any one organization (or even one nation) can take on. It requires all of us, and will take a generational \u2013 and multigenerational \u2013 commitment. While \u201cthe arc of the moral universe,\u201d may \u201cbend towards justice,\u201d (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. & Theodore Parker), it still requires relentless progress to make justice a reality. I invite you to join us in this work as we endeavor to make the world a better \u2013 more welcoming and peaceful \u2013 place for all.<\/p>\n

As SYL Foundation wraps up its 15th year of grantmaking, I am proud of what our team has accomplished. With your support, the Foundation has distributed a cumulative total of over $12 million dollars in grants, scholarships, and disaster relief aid. We are continually evolving our processes in our trust-based approach to supporting our grantee partners, paying special attention to investments that strengthen the nonprofit eco-system providing critical services to our communities. From covering real-time unanticipated needs with our Rapid Response Fund to supporting sabbaticals for BIPOC leadership and self-care workshops for frontline staff, SYL Foundation stands alongside our partners as they lead the charge in ensuring that our immigrant and refugee communities thrive. This year, the Foundation grew its community-led grantmaking efforts that place decision-making power entirely in the hands of our partners, directing support to smaller immigrant-led grassroots organizations that may not have access to traditional philanthropy. Then with the launch of the Justice Fund, investments were also made to advance longer term advocacy efforts effecting systemic change.<\/p>\n

\n(Narges Mohammadi) \u5beb\u9053\uff1a\u300c\u6211\u76f8\u4fe1\uff0c\u548c\u5e73\u8207\u4eba\u6b0a\u7684\u5168\u7403\u5316\u6bd4\u5176\u4ed6\u4efb\u4f55\u4e8b\u7269\u7684\u5168\u7403\u5316\u90fd\u66f4\u52a0\u91cd\u8981\u548c\u6709\u6548\u3002 \u300d\u96a8\u8457\u4e16\u754c\u8a31\u591a\u5730\u5340\u66b4\u529b\u885d\u7a81\u8086\u8650\uff0c\u9019\u53e5\u8a71\u7684\u78ba\u6b63\u78ba\u3002\u806f\u5408\u570b\u7a31\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u6b63\u5728\u898b\u8b49\u6709\u53f2\u4ee5\u4f86\u6700\u9ad8\u7684\u6d41\u96e2\u5931\u6240\u7387\uff0c\u5168\u4e16\u754c\u6709\u8d85\u904e 1.1 \u5104\u4eba\u88ab\u8feb\u6d41\u96e2\u5931\u6240\u3002\u4f5c\u70ba\u4e00\u500b\u7531\u79fb\u6c11\u5275\u7acb\u3001\u9818\u5c0e\u548c\u652f\u6301\u7684\u7d44\u7e54\uff0c\u76e7\u52dd\u5f65\u4f48\u65bd\u57fa\u91d1\u6703\u76f8\u4fe1\uff0c\u722d\u53d6\u666e\u904d\u4eba\u6b0a\uff0c\u5305\u62ec\u5b89\u5168\u548c\u516c\u6b63\u7684\u79fb\u6c11\u6b0a\uff0c\u662f\u6211\u5011\u7684\u96c6\u9ad4\u8cac\u4efb\u3002\u6211\u5011\u610f\u8b58\u5230\u570b\u969b\u58d3\u8feb\u9ad4\u5236\u5c0e\u81f4\u6d41\u96e2\u5931\u6240\u3001\u525d\u524a\u548c\u8feb\u5bb3\uff0c\u6b63\u5728\u7814\u7a76\u5982\u4f55\u6700\u597d\u5730\u9032\u884c\u6709\u610f\u7fa9\u7684\u5354\u52a9\uff0c\u4ee5\u89e3\u6c7a\u5f71\u97ff\u5168\u7403\u79fb\u6c11\u7684\u56e0\u7d20\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u7e7c\u7e8c\u81f4\u529b\u65bc\u83ef\u76db\u9813 King\u3001Pierce \u548c Snohomish \u5404\u90e1\u7684\u7576\u5730\u793e\u5340\u3002
\n\u6211\u5011\u529b\u6c42\u66f4\u597d\u5730\u77ad\u89e3\u5f71\u97ff\u88ab\u8feb\u79fb\u5f99\u7684\u5168\u7403\u529b\u91cf\u548c\u5236\u5ea6\uff0c\u4ee5\u4fbf\u6211\u5011\u80fd\u5920\u52aa\u529b\u985b\u8986\u5b83\u5011\u3002\u9019\u9805\u5de5\u4f5c\u7dca\u8feb\u3001\u8907\u96dc\u4e14\u898f\u6a21\u5b8f\u5927\uff0c\u4e26\u8d85\u51fa\u4efb\u4f55\u7d44\u7e54\uff08\u751a\u81f3\u4e00\u500b\u570b\u5bb6\uff09\u6240\u80fd\u627f\u64d4\u7684\u7bc4\u570d\u3002\u9019\u9700\u8981\u6211\u5011\u6240\u6709\u4eba\u7684\u627f\u8afe\uff0c\u4e26\u5c07\u6b64\u627f\u8afe\u50b3\u627f\u7d66\u5f8c\u4ee3\u3002\u96d6\u7136\u300c\u9053\u5fb7\u5b87\u5b99\u7684\u5f27\u7dda\u300d\u53ef\u80fd\u300c\u8da8\u5411\u6b63\u7fa9\u300d\uff08 \u4f86\u6e90\uff1a\u99ac\u4e01\u8def\u5fb7\u91d1\u6069\u535a\u58eb\u53ca\u897f\u5967\u591a\u00b7\u5e15\u514b\uff09\u4ecd\u7136\u9700\u8981\u4e0d\u65b7\u53d6\u5f97\u9032\u5c55\u624d\u80fd\u4f7f\u6b63\u7fa9\u6210\u70ba\u73fe\u5be6\u3002\u6211\u9080\u8acb\u60a8\u52a0\u5165\u9019\u9805\u5de5\u4f5c\uff0c\u52aa\u529b\u8b93\u4e16\u754c\u6210\u70ba\u4e00\u500b\u66f4\u7f8e\u597d\u3001\u66f4\u53d7\u6b61\u8fce\u3001\u66f4\u548c\u5e73\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u3002
\n\u5728\u76e7\u52dd\u5f65\u4f48\u65bd\u57fa\u91d1\u6703\u7b2c 15 \u5c46\u6350\u8d08\u6d3b\u52d5\u5373\u5c07\u7d50\u675f\u4e4b\u969b\uff0c\u6211\u70ba\u5927\u5bb6\u4e00\u8d77\u6240\u53d6\u5f97\u7684\u6210\u5c31\u611f\u5230\u81ea\u8c6a\u3002\u6709\u4e86\u5927\u5bb6\u7684\u652f\u6301\uff0c\u57fa\u91d1\u6703\u5df2\u7d2f\u7a4d\u767c\u653e\u4e86\u8d85\u904e 1,200 \u842c\u7f8e\u5143\u7684\u8d08\u6b3e\u3001\u734e\u5b78\u91d1\u548c\u707d\u96e3\u6551\u63f4\u5e6b\u52a9\u3002\u6211\u5011\u4ee5\u57fa\u65bc\u4fe1\u4efb\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u4e0d\u65b7\u6539\u9032\u6211\u5011\u7684\u6d41\u7a0b\uff0c\u4ee5\u652f\u6301\u6211\u5011\u7684\u53d7\u8d08\u5408\u4f5c\u5925\u4f34\uff0c\u7279\u5225\u95dc\u6ce8\u90a3\u4e9b\u80fd\u5920\u52a0\u5f37\u70ba\u793e\u5340\u63d0\u4f9b\u95dc\u9375\u670d\u52d9\u7684\u975e\u71df\u5229\u751f\u614b\u7cfb\u7d71\u7684\u7d44\u7e54\u3002\u5f9e\u5229\u7528\u6211\u5011\u7684\u5feb\u901f\u56de\u61c9\u57fa\u91d1\u6eff\u8db3\u5373\u6642\u7684\u610f\u5916\u9700\u6c42\uff0c\u5230\u652f\u63f4 \u6709\u8272\u4eba\u7a2e \u9818\u5c0e\u5c64\u7684\u4f11\u5047\u4ee5\u53ca\u70ba\u7b2c\u4e00\u7dda\u54e1\u5de5\u8209\u8fa6\u81ea\u6211\u7167\u8b77\u7814\u8a0e\u6703\uff0c\u76e7\u52dd\u5f65\u4f48\u65bd\u57fa\u91d1\u6703\u8207\u6211\u5011\u7684\u5408\u4f5c\u5925\u4f34\u4e26\u80a9\u4f5c\u6230\uff0c\u5e36\u982d\u78ba\u4fdd\u6211\u5011\u7684\u79fb\u6c11\u548c\u96e3\u6c11\u793e\u5340\u84ec\u52c3\u767c\u5c55\u3002\u4eca\u5e74\uff0c\u57fa\u91d1\u6703\u52a0\u5f37\u4e86\u793e\u5340\u4e3b\u5c0e\u7684\u64a5\u6b3e\u529b\u5ea6\uff0c\u5c07\u6c7a\u7b56\u6b0a\u5b8c\u5168\u638c\u63e1\u5728\u6211\u5011\u7684\u5408\u4f5c\u5925\u4f34\u624b\u4e2d\uff0c\u70ba\u5c0f\u578b\u79fb\u6c11\u4e3b\u5c0e\u7684\u6148\u5584\u7d44\u7e54\u63d0\u4f9b\u652f\u63f4\u3002\u96a8\u5f8c\uff0c\u5728\u555f\u52d5\u6b63\u7fa9\u57fa\u91d1\u4ee5\u63a8\u52d5\u5f71\u97ff\u7cfb\u7d71\u6027\u8b8a\u9769\u7684\u9577\u671f\u5ba3\u50b3\u5de5\u4f5c\u3002

CAIR Washington<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>

CAIR Washington is a non-profit advocacy organization that serves
\nthe Muslim community within Washington State through free legal
\nservices, civic engagement education, and community building. SYL
\nFoundation funding was able to help CAIR-WA respond to the influx of
\nAfghani refugees through their program, the Immigrant Justice Project
\n(IJP). \u201cDari and Pashto are not easy languages to find interpreters for
\nbut we had SYLF funding we could rely on so we could get interpreters
\nin those languages,\u201d says Noor AlSaleh, the director of Operations and
\nPhilanthropy. CAIR-WA continues to perform community outreach
\nfor newly arrived refugees in Washington State to assist the most vulnerable in the community. In reflection on the partnership between SYLF and CAIR-WA, Noor continued, \u201cWe can do what we think is best in the moment [in
\nresponse to immigration crisis] and know that the funding will support us.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>

CAIR Washington \u662f\u4e00\u5bb6\u975e\u71df\u5229\u5021\u5c0e\u7d44\u7e54\uff0c\u900f\u904e\u514d\u8cbb\u6cd5\u5f8b\u670d\u52d9\u3001\u516c\u6c11\u53c3\u8207\u6559\u80b2\u548c\u793e\u5340\u5efa\u8a2d\u70ba\u83ef\u76db\u9813\u5dde\u7684\u7a46\u65af\u6797\u793e\u5340\u63d0

API Chaya<\/h3><\/div><\/div><\/div>

API Chaya is a survivor-led non-profit organization focused on aiding
\nand serving the survivors of sexual and domestic violence and human
\ntrafficking within immigrant and refugee communities. They center
\ndiverse perspectives and marginalized communities, and in the past
\nyear, served over 700 survivors and their families through programs
\nlike free and culturally-relevant therapy, and support for survivors to
\nobtain visas, work permits, and citizenship.<\/span><\/p><\/div>

The GIV Fellowship, an initiative of YouthRoots, partners with philanthropic foundations to connect under-represented youth with the philanthropic field through placement in host foundations. This year, SYL Foundation hosted two fellows, Jibril Ali-Halane and Sophia Hounton. Jibril is a junior at UW Foster majoring in Finance and Information Systems. Sophia is a junior at Seattle University majoring in International Studies and French. During his time as a fellow, Jibril researched and wrote a report exploring possibilities for funding projects addressing women and girls\u2019 health, education, and empowerment in developing countries, and the root causes of migration. Sophia worked on expanding SYL Foundation\u2019s Community-Led Grantmaking initiative which awarded grants to 18 local organizations serving immigrants and refugees as nominated by current and past grantees. Sophia said of her time with SYLF, \u201cAs a fellow with Sheng- Yen Lu Foundation in partnership with YouthRoots, I was able to better understand the philanthropic field. It fulfilled me both professionally and personally as an activist who is dedicated to equity and systemic change. Aleena is a freshman at UW Bothell studying Software Engineering as a recipient of SYL Foundation\u2019s Lotus Scholarship. Aleena is from Pakistan, where her family lived near the Afghan-Pakistan border and where the presence of the Taliban hindered the ability of girls to attend school. When the Coronavirus pandemic hit, Aleena began learning computer science through a laptop. Then in 2021, when Aleena was halfway through her junior year of high school, she moved with her family to the United States. They were initially homeless before she helped her parents find organizations that assisted them with securing housing. Now established in Seattle and pursuing higher education, Aleena is continuing her studies in computer science. She participates in programs that promote the involvement and education of women in STEM such as the Cyber Security Career Fest for Women and the Women in Informatics Hackathon.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The BIPOC ED Coalition of Washington State is a coalition uniting over 200 BIPOC nonprofit leaders for a future that promotes the wellness of BIPOC nonprofit leadership with a sabbatical program awarding paid sabbaticals to BIPOC executive directors. Victoria Santos, Co-Executive Director of the Coalition says, \u201cWe believe that sabbaticals are critically important because they enable BIPOC leaders to rest deeply and reconnect with their vision and well-being while strengthening organizational capacity. BIPOC leaders are uniquely capable changemakers. When we invest in the health of our BIPOC leaders, we are investing in healthy futures and thriving communities across the state.\u201d Brenda Rodriguez Lopez (pictured), the Executive Director of the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN), was awarded one of the paid sabbaticals by the BIPOC ED Coalition. WAISN is a network dedicated to improving the wellbeing of immigrant communities in Washington State. She describes how the sabbatical was vital to her own health, saying, \u201cThere\u2019s no we without the I. For all of us to be well, I need to be well and it\u2019s okay for me to take a step back.\u201d Not only was a sabbatical important for Rodriguez Lopez as an individual, but it also benefited WAISN as an organization: \u201cWAISN is led by trans, queer, undocumented BIPOC and we come from communities where rest wasn\u2019t an option. We needed to work, we needed to hustle. So for me it was really important as one of the executive directors to model rest, healing, restoration.\u201d SYLF champions the BIPOC ED Coalition by funding its sabbatical program.
